Mariyadas Nevis Dilrukshan, another detainee who suffered severe head injuries at the Vavuniya prison when two prison officials were rescued in a hostage drama, was confirmed dead at the Ragama hospital yesterday .

Dilrukshan (34) was the second detainee who succumbed to his injuries following the death of another detainee Ganeshan Niumalaruban who  died a month ago at the Ragama hospital.

According to sources, Dilrukshan who hailed from Jaffna has been in a coma since he was admitted to the Ragama hospital from the Mahara prison where he had suffered head injuries. The sources added that Dilrukshan died at around 10 p.m.  at the Ragama hospital on Tuesday.

Meanwhile Dilrukshan’s family members from Jaffna are now in Ragama to take over the body. It is expected that Dilrukshan’s body will be allowed to be taken to Jaffna for the funeral, sources said.
