The team was conducting investigations into the incident where an 18-year-old suspect died in remand prison, as the Judicial Medical Officer's report had suggested the suspect was assaulted.

Seven officers, including a Sub Inspector, four constables, a member of the... ...Civil Security Force and Police security assistant, who went to arrest a group of treasure hunters on 7 May, had been arrested by police on suspicion that they were responsible for the death of Sandun Malinga, the victim.

On 7 May, five suspects were arrested and remanded, and on 9 May, Malinga, one of the suspects, died after being admitted to hospital after falling sick in remand prison, SSP Ajith Rohana said.

The post-mortem examination conducted on the deceased had revealed that he had died due to internal injuries following physical assault.

After it came to light that the suspects were assaulted by the police on the day of the incident, an investigation was conducted by an ASP, on the instructions of SSP, Badulla Division Chandana Galappatthi, and statements were recorded from the suspects now in remand custody, over the incident.

An investigation report was submitted to Badulla Magistrate, Maheshika Silva along with suspects yesterday. She ordered the suspects to be remanded till 23 May and an identification parade is to take place on 16 May.
