Former Army Chief Sarath Fonseka denying allegations of misuse of funds received for his election campaign, said majority of the monies were utilized to fund the publicity and media campaigns.
Fonseka made this comment while answering a question raised by a journalist who had attended his press conference held at the Taj Samudra Hotel yesterday, who had based his question on a news article published in a website run by an opposition member.
Fonseka refuting the claim that Democratic National Alliance (DNA) Parliamentarian Tiran Alles had embezzled funds to the tune of Rs 1 billion said that Alles was a well-reputed personality in the country.
“For my election campaign, I received Rs 600 million. I didn’t receive funds the way some people have claimed. No one could steal that money as they were spent in the manner that they came. Tiran Alles is a businessman with integrity. He too spent for my election campaign,” Fonseka said.
