Ranil challenged to win

By Sarasi Paranamanna

Organization to Protect the United National Party and trade unions challenged Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to show the country a victory by winning either the Sabaragamuwa or North Central provincial elections while giving leadership to the Party.

Writing a letter to Wickremesinghe secretary of the Organization Lal Perera made this challenge while alleging that Wickremsinghe is letting down the United National Party members and supporters through his dictatorial leadership.

He further alleged that earlier Wickremesinghe took over the Colombo Municipal Council instead of conducting election campaigns in other districts where provincial council elections were being held because Wickremesinghe was aware that the UNP supporters’ base was stronger in Colombo due to the service done by late President Ranasinghe Premadasa.

Perera also asserted that Wickremesinghe is also turning a blind eye to the supporters who supported the Party despite the risk of losing their jobs and properties during elections and added that that it is why Wickremesinghe passively gave the hard won victory in 2001 back to the Chandrika Bandaranaike government without even helping out the Party supporters.

While posing the challenge he also alleged that Wickremesinghe instead of making plans to ensure the Party’s victory is touring around the world boasting that he is the President of the Asian Zone of the World Democratic Forum.
