A third suspect wanted in connection with the bank heist of the Bank of Ceylon branch in Battaramulla, was arrested by police yesterday.
Investigations carried out by the Batharamulla Police have revealed that the third suspect was an army deserter who resides in close proximity to the bank.
Speaking to Ceylon Today Military Spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasuriya stated that the deserter has been identified as 23 year old Tharaka Malinda Chaturanga. He has joined the army on 15 March 2009 and had deserted on 01 October the same year.
Another army soldier who was on leave was killed in the police shooting when he attempted to hurl a grenade at the police, while another suspect was arrested.
The suspect has told police that their accomplice who had died in the incident had planned the robbery.
Meanwhile Brigadier Wanigasuriya also stated that the army had arrested 680 deserters in March, 484 in April and 617 in May.
