A 13-year-old boy returning home after a school field trip was run over by an army jeep at Thirukkovil, in Ampara District.

The accident took place in front of the Road Development Authority (RDA) office in Ampara, along the Akkaraipattu-Thirikkovil Road yesterday around 5:30 p.m.

According to the police, the child was run over by the vehicle, when he was crossing the main road.

The Thirikkovil Police arrested the jeep driver, Lance Corporal B. Liyanage Sumith, and produced him in the Pottuvil Magistrate’s Court, today.

The child was killed on the spot and the remains were taken to the Akkaraipattu Base Hospital for the postmortem. The victim was identified as Sathyanandan Sarath Raj, who was a resident of Thambiluvil, Ampara.
