A police officer, suspected of swindling Rs 800,000 from a woman by promising marriage, was arrested by the Moratuwa Police and was remanded till 29 June by Moratuwa Chief Magistrate, Priyantha Fernando.
According to police, Kekulandalage Sampath Wijeratne, an officer attached to the Police Head Quarters, was having an affair with a young woman from the Waskaduwa area. He had introduced himself to her under a false name and obtained money by promising to marry her, police said.
The woman had caught on to the deception and had invited the suspect to meet her in Katubedda, Moratuwa, and when the fraudster had reached the meeting point, it was the police who had lain in wait for him, instead of the woman.
