JVP plans to take Katuwana case to SC

By Gagani Weerakoon

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) is planning to take the Katuwana issue to the Supreme Court citing police negligence in carrying out duties assigned to them.

JVP Propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath said they are planning to file a petition in the Supreme Court soon, as perpetrators of the Katuwana double murder are still at large.

“Joolampitiye Amare – the man identified as the main suspect in the Katuwana killings – appeared in courts. Until he surrendered to court, police failed to arrest him. Though it had passed a week since the double murder, other members of the killer squad are moving freely and the police have failed to arrest a single suspect so far. It is not only the perpetrators, even the weapons used in the crime have still not been found due to police inaction,” he said.

The Tangalle Magistrate held the police responsible for allowing Geegana Gamage Amarasena alias Joolampitiye Amare to commit crimes unabated, Herath said.

He alleged that several government ministers are speaking in support of the incident and keep underworld members around them for the deep disappointment of the public.

“In fact, Dr. Rajitha Senaratna justified having underworld members to support politicians. He was heard as saying it is not completely out of context to keep such goons around as they help politicians during elections to paste posters and banners and various other propaganda activities. Such remarks clearly show that government is not bothered about eradicating underworld,” he added.
