A recent survey carried out by UNHCR in India has revealed that Sri Lankans remain second to Tibetans in seeking refuge in India. Even the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama had sought refuge in India following the Chinese occupation of Tibet.
Tibetans living in India have been numbered as 56 % and Sri Lankans in second place with 36.73%.
The majority of Sri Lankan’s who have sought refuge in India, live in the State of Tamil Nadu. The estimated number is around 68,000 the UNHRC report said.
Around 110 refugee centers are housing Sri Lankan Tamils in Tamil Nadu. When the Lankan crisis escalated in the early eighties a large number of Lankan refugees sought refuge in Rameswaram .
However, since the end of the war in Sri Lanka in 2009, a large number of Lankan refugees have expressed their willingness to return to Sri Lanka and be resettled in their original places of settlement. In addition, hundreds more have already returned to Sri Lanka with the aid of UNHCR, sources said.
