The Police Department intends to probe and regulate rent-a –car agencies as rented vehicles were found to have been used by criminals and offenders to commit many crimes and illegal acts, recently.
The Police Media Spokesman Ajith Rohana says that there are some constraints in determining the identity and whereabouts of a criminal or offender who has utilizes a rented car for such criminal activities.
The Ceylon Today learns that except for a photocopy of the National Identity Card and some security deposit no elaborate documentation is called forth from a potential customer who wants to rent a vehicle.
It is no secret that the police on most occasions find themselves at a dead end when investigating into crimes or illegal acts committed by offenders utilizing rented vehicles.
Therefore, the police intend to regulate the rent-a-car industry with a view to cubing the rising incidence of crime.
Meanwhile, JVP parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake told Ceylon Today that the immediate reason for the rising crime wave is the breakdown of the national economy.
