The United National Party (UNP) assured victory in the three Provincial Council Elections, after submitting nominations for seven districts yesterday (19).
Addressing a press conference at the UNP Headquarters, Opposition Leader, Ranil Wickremasinghe said, “We don’t see a point in holding elections in the three other provinces when there is an urgent need for the Northern Provincial Council Election.”
He also said the government is earning the wrath of the people in the North, by postponing the election there. “Their scheduled date for the election is causing disruption among the people. It is unfair for the people of the North-Central Province, as they are experiencing drought, and also holding the elections during Ramazan. It is also unfair for the people of the Eastern Province, where most are Muslims,” he added.
The UNP Leader also said, “We have appointed a special committee comprising Sajith Premadasa, Tissa Attanayake and Gamini Jayawickrama Perera to coordinate election and the campaigning programmes,” he said.
Three committees have been appointed to carry out campaigns in all three provinces and members of the party have been appointed to separate districts in the three provinces, he said adding, “The UNP will not forget the fact that during these campaigns, we will still be continuing our propaganda against the government and if by any chance by November, the government fails to meet our demands, we will have to protest.”
