Thriving with the vision of becoming the global role model for community centred social development, International Movement for Community Development (IMCD) has demonstrated clear prospects of becoming an exemplary social service organization in Sri Lanka.
IMCD is a non-political, independent, not-for-profit organization driven by energetic youth of Sri Lanka. Its’ members envisage on rural development, environmental preservation, bridging regional disparity, enhancing the skills of the community and alleviating poverty in Sri Lanka.Wovenaround the core principle of “From the society.. To the society.. With the society..” IMCD endeavoursto strengthen the hands of the people who are in need.
Needy Readers Project
Needy Readers is yet another timely initiative of IMCD to uplift the educational system,with the broader perspective of improving the living standards and alleviating poverty in Sri Lanka. The initiative is a prolonged attempt which will be implemented on an annual basis. By the true sense of word “The Needy Readers” project is predominantly focussed on granting,reading and other stationary facilities to underprivileged schools in Sri Lanka. They attempt to bring the wisdom of books to students to help their innocent pursuits in reaching greater heights by giving them subtle of maths and logic, knowledge from history, wit of poets and stories, bravery of adventures in order to help them to see the world as it is.
Under this initiative they have meticulously selected some underprivileged schools in rural as well as in urban areas to equip them with library facilities and to assist them with other essential stationaries to their studies.
Thunnana-SiriSumanajothiMahaVidyalaya, Nivithigala-ColambagamaMahaVidyalaya,Rajagiriya-SiriHadaVidyalaya and Dale-Tamil Vidyalaya are some of the schools which will be benefited from this project in 2012. The Magazine Prison also will bebenefited from this initiative, where stationery will be provided to fulfil the prevailing necessities.
Reading Materials and Inkind Donations
New books, as well as used books in good condition and all in kind materials are being collected to be disseminated to the selected schools. All generous books and in kind donations are highly valued, as it helps to light the future of these innocent kids. Further the prime focus has given on the syllabus related publications,as it aidsthe studies notwithstanding the acceptance of other reading materials.
At present centralised book collection is undertaken, with few key locations at Nawinna, Borella and Rajagiriya. But with the progressive escalation in book donations, the collection centres will be set up to encompass major cities in Sri Lanka. The books and stationery items will be distributed commemorating the World Children’s Day on October 1st.
Partnering Companies
An array of book publishers, mass media companies are working in collaboration with IMCD as partnering companies to make this endeavourer a success. Sarasavi Book Shop, Gunasena Book Publishers, Godage Book Publishers have extended their assistance for the project as Publication Partners andthesepublishers have enabled the facility of online purchasing of books to this project at a concessionary value. The Radicals being the Media Partner assist the community awareness of the Needy Readers project.
The enthusiasm and active partaking of the youth in this initiative is noteworthy and it is a clear indication of the change the youth can embellishin the society with the precise guidance and advices.

The Colombo International Book Fair will also have a collection point for Needy Reader donations.
