Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardena believes it won’t be long before a cricketer can emerge from the battle-scarred region of the north and east after he set the ball rolling in a current championship where already two major upsets had taken place.
Schools T-20 champions Trinity College became the first casualty when they lost to a team from Jaffna followed by another team called Seenigama FOG with three Youth World Cup players moved down by a combined team from Trinco-Batticaloa.
“Obviously they have got talent. These kids have been deprived of opportunities and the response has been amazing”, said Jayawardena who on Saturday along with many of his team-mates declared open the event where teams from Colombo, Kandy, Hambantota, Kurunegala, Ambalangoda and Anuradhapura are playing against teams in the north and east that few believed had the spirits to hit back.
