Marketing Sri Lanka is the key point in tourism

Eden Resort and Spa General Manager Eksath Wijeratne in an interview with Ceylon FT's Hiyal Biyagamage, opines that hospitality is in the blood of all Sri Lankans but cautions that the country has to be aggressively marketed as a discerning tourist destination. "When you compare with other countries, hospitality is in our blood. No one can argue on that. The correct techniques have to be clearly taught. In the meantime, we have to look more at the talented youth. With their talents, the industry will experience a huge growth," emphasizes Wijeratne.

Even India markets herself. Sri Lanka needs to advertise herself through the internet and through television channels in traditional tourist nations like Britain and the US plus India and other nations. 27 years have defined Sri Lanka as a place of turmoil. That translates to a couple of generations. Those tourists who regularly went to Sri Lanka before the 1970's are either too old or dead. The new generation across the world hardly knows that the civil war is over and do not have the knowledge of their elders of the paradise called Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has to start again to promote herself to attract a whole new brand of tourists.
