Certain areas in the country experienced power cuts without prior warning yesterday, in spite of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) stating that the consumers will be notified before the cuts are imposed.
However, the Ministry of Power and Energy said they had immediately stopped the power cuts, as the consumers were not issued with prior warning.
The ministry said a special committee had been appointed to identify areas to impose power cuts, and accordingly, the CEB issued the power cut schedule last evening.
Meanwhile, the CEB said steps are being taken to recommence work at the Kerawalapitiya and Lakvijaya Power Plants.
Chairman of the Board, Prof. Wimaladharma Abeywickrama said they intend to finalize work at the Kerawalapitiya Power Plant by 28 July, adding that, due to certain technical faults at the Kerawalapitiya and Lakvijaya Power Plants, the power supply to certain areas of the country have to be halted for 2 hours and 15 minutes from 8:30 to 5:30 p.m., and for 45 minutes from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. until operations at the power plants return to normalcy or hydro power generation is increased to 25-30 per cent.
Accordingly, power cuts will be imposed in four blocks for a maximum period of 2 hours 15 minutes.
The areas of Anuradhapura, Habarana, Vavuniya, Thulhiriya, Pannala, Bolawatte, Puttalam, Kurunegala, Chilaw, Madampe, Ampara, Trincomalee, Biyagama, Katunayake, Kosgama, Kelaniya, Aniyakanda, Veyangoda, Athurugiriya, Pannipitiya, Seethawaka, Embilipitiya, Badulla, Nuwara Eliya, Rantembe, Ambalangoda, Deniyaya, Galle, Matara, Matugama, Panadura, Kiribathkumbura, Horana, Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, Dehiwala, Valachchena, Kotugoda, Sapugaskanda, Ukuwela, Wimalasurendra, Hambantota, Beliatta and Ratmalana, will experience power cuts in four blocks from 8:30 to 10:45 a.m., 10:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, in the Colombo city, Galle Face, Janadhipathi Mawatha, Vauxhall Street, Dickmans Road, Independence Avenue, Jawatte, Torrington Avenue, Horton Place, Rosmead Place, Borella, Cotta Road, Barnes Place, Ward Place, Town Hall, Dam Street, Sugathadasa Stadium, Grandpass and areas surrounding the Premadasa Stadium will experience power cuts between 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.
Power will be curtailed in the areas of Empire City, Bambalapitiya Flats, Havelock Road, Kirulapone, Mayura Place, Gothami Road, Ananda Rajakaruna Mw., Maligawatte, Sangaraja Mw., Jethawana Road, St. John’s Street, Ketawelamulla, Messenger Street, and adjacent areas from 10:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
From 1:00 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. York St., 1st and 2nd Cross Street, Chatham Street, Sir Baron Jayatillake Mw., a section of Galle Face, Union Place, Dharmapala Mw., Liberty Plaza, Colpetty Market Complex, Bambalapitiya, Elvitigala Mw., Ananda Coomaraswamy Mw., Punchi Borella, Dematagoda, Baseline Road, Bodhiraja Mw., Sirimavo Bandaranaike Mw., Technical Junction, and areas surrounding the port will also experience power cuts.
The areas of Crescat Residencies, NDB Bank Complex, Nawam Mw., Havelock City Complex, Wellawatte and surrounding areas, Albert Crescent, Cambridge Place, Sir Marcus Fernando Mw., Wijerama Road, Bauddhaloka Mw., Wanathamulla, Manning Economic Centre, Olcott Mw., Pettah, Kotahena, Alwis Place, and surrounding areas will experience power cuts between 3:15 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, in the above areas, a further power cut of 45 minutes will be imposed between 6:30 and 7:15, 7:15 to 8:00, 8:00 to 8:45 and 8:45 to 9:30 pm. according to Prof. Wimaladharma.
The CEB said all regional engineers’ offices will be informed through the Deputy General Managers’ offices.
However, he said if there are any breakdowns after 9:00 a.m. today they could be informed to 1987 to obtain further information.
