The 58th summit of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) is scheduled to be opened by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, in Colombo, at 9:00 a.m. today (11).
All Sri Lankan parliamentarians have been invited to participate in the summit, attended by parliamentarians of 58 countries.
Speaker, Chamal Rajapaksa who is also Chairman of Inter Parliamentary Union of Commonwealth Countries said the summit has important to Sri Lanka, as a rehearsal in view of the 2013 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) being scheduled to be held in the country.
He indicated the summit helps enhance the image of Sri Lanka. CPA summits had been held in Sri Lanka in 1974 and 1995.
The Speaker added that unemployment, health issues, education would be some of the topics that may be taken up at the summit and bilateral relations could also be enhanced through the discussions taking place between leaders.
