Vaiko in flowery send off

Our Chennai correspondent

The Madhya Pradesh (MP) Police who arrested the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam(MDMK) Leader, V.Gopalswamy, also known as Vaiko  for  protesting against the visit of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to the State on Friday, released him and offered him flowers and garlanded him yesterday.

The police Officials told the MDMK leader, they had to take him and his supporters into custody on Friday as a precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incident in the State during the visit of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The senior police officials in Sindh Wara, the border city in Madhya Pradesh where V.Gopalswamy was arrested, garlanded him and offered him flowers when he was released from police custody. A large number of BJP supporters were also present when V.Gopalswamy was released. Shivraj Singh Chauhan, the Chief Minister of the BJP-led State Government, in Madhya Pradesh, earlier ignored a request from the MDMK Leader V.Gopalswamy to prevent the arrival of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to Madhya Pradesh.

However, the MDMK leader with his 750 supporters left Chennai in 20 coaches crossing 1,530 km to Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday. Around 5000 police personnel were deployed by the Madhya Pradesh State Government at the border city Sindh Wara to prevent the MDMK Leader from entering the State, reports said.

The train and the bus services were also stopped from Sindh Wara to prevent the MDMK Leaders from travelling to Sanchi, where President Rajapaksa arrived, to lay the foundation stone for a Buddhist educational centre on Friday.
