Like playing a veena to a deaf elephant – Kariyawasam

By Amila Jayasinghe

United National Party (UNP) yesterday expressed their solidarity with university dons and stated the party too would join the protest march organized by the Federation of University Teachers’ Association (FUTA).

MP Akila Viraj Kariyawasam addressing the media called on all party supporters to join and support FUTA’s march, but urged all to refrain from displaying anything green or representing only the party.

“This is not a political struggle, but a struggle for about the students of this country. Thus, we will also promote the colour of FUTA, which is purple, without promoting our party” he said.

He said the quality of the country’s education has gone from bad to worse from school admissions to gaining access to universities.

He charged the government of bringing politics into education, and for lending a deaf ear to the demands raised by FUTA. “It is like playing the veena to a deaf elephant,” he said.

He said they will join the march of FUTA, from Galle today (24) at 8.00 a.m. and continue till Friday (28).
