Four-goal Renown lift knock-out Cup

Renown emerged as the new champions after defeating defending champions Ratnam 4-1 in the Phoenix Cup Invitational Knock-out Football Tournament final at the City League ground, Slave Island yesterday.

 


Renown had the game in their grips in the first half scoring three goals as against Ratnam’s one. In the second half they sealed their victory by scoring another goal.

 


Ratnam came back strongly in the final minutes of play but couldn’t convert their attacks into goals as they missed several scoring chances.

 


Renown skipper A.A. Ahamed opened the scoring for them and also finished off with the final goal. Besides, the second goal was scored by Sameer Ahamed and their third goal was scored by S. Mohammed.

 


R. Mohideen scored the solitary goal for Ratnam.

 


The tournament was conducted by the City Football League began on November 19 with eight teams invited to compete.
