Rugby referees are to be felicitated for the first time for the tremendous and untiring work they do under immense pressure on the field. The Sri Lanka Society of Rugby Football Referees (SLSRFR) are organizing this awards ceremony in conjunction with Dialog Axiata at Galadari Hotel Colombo on 13 January.

Nizam Jamaldeen, President of the SLSRFR, told Ceylon Today that he initiated this awards ceremony after a meeting with Committee Members.

"We should felicitate our referees because they are doing a tremendous job during matches, both for clubs and schools, and so far their services have not been recognized."

"At the inaugural ceremony awards will be presented in five categories to these referees. First we will felicitate the past presidents of SLSRFR and also the 'A' Division referees," noted Jamaldeen.

Best members of the SLSRFR, the up and coming referees and the chief match official (CMO) will be selected for awards.

The SLSRFR had also recently conducted a referee's educator course to develop the local referees on a mutual understanding that was agreed by the Sri Lanka Rugby. They are thankful to the SLR and the England Rugby Referees Society for this gesture.
