The government had recruited 500 persons, as dengue control field assistants, to combat the scourge which has reached epidemic level in certain areas.

According to the Health Ministry, 100 field assistants will be deployed in Kinniya, where the dengue had reached an epidemic level killing several people.

The Cabinet has granted approval to recruit 1,500 dengue control field assistants and the next batch of 1,000 will be recruited next week.

There is a significant rise in dengue cases reported during the first 10 weeks of 2017, with total number exceeding 20,000, the data from the Epidemiology Unit, Health Ministry said. According to the data, 20,147 dengue cases have been reported for the current year with the bulk from the Colombo District. Last year, the number of dengue deaths also increased drastically.

According to the data, the number of dengue deaths reported in 2016 had increased, by 37, to 91 as against the 54 reported in 2015. Accordingly, 55,150 dengue cases had been reported in 2016 when compared to 29,777 cases the previous year.

According to the National Dengue Control Unit Consultant, Community Physician Dr. Preshila Samaraweera, the possible change of the nature of the dengue virus was likely to be a major reason for the rapid increase of cases reported during last year.
