Weeding the garden is possibly one of the least enjoyable tasks for keen gardeners, which is why a robot has been developed to take care of the hard work.

The Tertill, which resembles a tiny white tank, uses algorithms to ensure it takes care of as many weeds as possible.

The robotic weeder is being developed by Massachusetts-based Franklin Robotics, under the expert guidance of Joe Jones, co-inventor of iRobot 's Roomba robot vacuum cleaner.

"The idea for Tertill came about as a way for gardeners like me, as well as more experienced gardeners to grow a healthy garden without worrying about weeds," explains Mr Jones, CTO at the startup, in a blog post .

The garden 'bot runs on solar power and is also waterproof, so that it can be safely left out in the garden, even if it rains.

On-board sensors tell it when to turn away from plants so that it won't go digging up the flower garden or vegetable patch, and they'll also detect when when it has run into an obstacle.

he Tertill treats any short plants in its path as weeds, and demolishes them with a string trimmer. To avoid damage to small seedlings, the firm provides plant collars to keep them safe.

"I'm working to develop Tertill so that I can enjoy planting, tending to crops, harvesting them, and enjoying the fruits - and vegetables and flowers - of my labour, without worrying about missing a day of weeding," said Mr Jones.

The robo-weeder is still in development, but those who want to know more can sign up on the maker's website for updates.

Tertill isn't the first robot to help out in the garden. There are a number of robotic lawnmowers available while the Kobi can shovel snow as well as collecting cut grass and leaves.
