CT Sports: Middle distance runner Nilani Rathnayake sealed the silver medal in the 3000m steeple chase as the Sri Lankan medal count increased to two silver medals at the Thailand Open Athletics Championship continued at Thammasat University Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand yesterday.

The Sri Lankan record holder of the event Nilani Rathnayake clocked 10 minutes 29.03 seconds to win the medal in conditions of extreme heat, which was marked as 35 degree Celsius. Her event was held at 3.20 p.m. Bangkok local time.

The athlete who trained under renowned coach Sajith Jayalal had earlier clocked a time of 10:03.94 seconds in April to set the Sri Lanka record for the event. That too was held late in the afternoon which helped her since she did not run in extreme heat.

Pole Vaulter Anitha Jagatheshwaran was unfortunate as she had to do her event around 1.30 p.m. local time under the hot sun with heat at 36 degrees Celsius and she could not clear her starting height.

Earlier in the championship long jumper Dhanuka Liyanapathirana won a silver medal in the long jump with a leap of 7.73m. Both of them will be eying medals at the forthcoming Asian Athletics Championship which is to be held in Bhuwaneshwar, India from 6 to 9 July.

Three Sri Lankan Athletes will be in action today in the Thai Open, with Ajith Karunathilaka starting the decathlon competition, while Ayesha Madhuwanthi will compete in her pet event the hammer throw where she is eyeing the first 50-metre mark by a Sri Lankan woman.

Kalinga Kumarage who is virtually in gold medal position with his semi-final timing, will compete in the 400m final today.
