CT Sports: Minister of Sports Dayasiri Jayasekara said that there is a coaching monopoly taking place and two reasons why our athletes are at such a low level is the selfishness of those qualified coaches who are blocking others from reaching the top level.
He made these observations at the certificate presentation ceremony of Sports Diploma Awards of Sports Science held at the Sport Ministry on Friday.

He further said that they uplifted the standards of the coaches after they took over office and also they have held discussions with the University of Canberra. At the next stage the ministry plans to extend the higher diploma to a degree level. Sri Lanka needs to push their institute of sports science in that direction.

"We need to keep in our minds that training procedures and physical exercising methods are constantly changing, just like in medical science. Sadly, our knowledge on this as a country is very low. We only have two, three top level athletic coaches. There is a coaching monopoly taking place. Two reasons why our athletics is at such a low level is the selfishness of those qualified coaches who are blocking others from reaching top level."

"We can produce top coaches and top athletes but Sri Lanka does not have enough coaches. We have selected 6440 kids from 316 schools islandwide to be coached until 2028. When I took over office there were a lot of coaches without any advanced training. I was adviced by Sajith Lal to discuss at provincial level and conduct more training as it will help us with the future coaching programmes of the kids," noted Minister Jayasekara.
