The Karaichi Pradeshiya Sabha (KPS) is encountering a major problem in supplying water to the drought hit Kilinochchi, as its water resources have also dried up, Pradeshiya Sabha Secretary K. Kamsananthan said.

The entire Northern Province is also badly affected by the drought.

Karaichi Pradeshiya Sabha is currently undertaking water supply to affected areas such as the villages of Serukkan, Elephant Pass, Umaiyalpuram and Thadduvankody.

The Pradeshiya Sabha needs 24,000 litres of water per day. So far, water had been obtained from the well belonging to the Pradeshiya Sabha and the agrarian services well.

However, currently the well belonging to the Karaichi Pradeshiya Sabha has dried up yielding only less than 4,000 litres. If the drought prolongs, alternate sources would have to be found, he said. (MT)
