Sections of the Eastern University was shut down temporarily yesterday due to certain unsettled conditions relating to student welfare and facilities, officials said.

Officials with the Deputy Vice Chancellor's office told Ceylon Today that the Vantharumoolai and Batticaloa premises of the university that includes several buildings and hostels were closed indefinitely yesterday and all students had been asked to leave the premises by noon today.

The students in all hostels were asked to vacate their rooms and handover the keys to the respective Warden or Sub-Wardens prior to departure.

However, Chairperson of the Eastern University Students' Federation (EUSF) Shrinath Liyanarachchi speaking to Ceylon Today said that the students will not vacate the hostels or the university premises until there are solutions to the many complaints that have already been made.

The EUSF has complained to both the administration and the University Grants Commission (UGC) regarding various hostel issues, students not receiving the Mahapola bursary incentive and several other matters.

A tense situation was reported at the University on 8 August when a large number of students surrounded the university's administrative building 'Senate House' and held its Vice Chancellor captive. In retaliation, the Police intervened and attempted to arrest several students as well.

Liyanarachchi claimed that they will not vacate the premises until there are solutions to the many issues faced by the students.
