At least 13 people died and more than 100 were injured – a number of them seriously – after a van ploughed into crowds on Barcelona's historic Las Ramblas, leaving bodies strewn across the tarmac as onlookers fled in panic, in an attack that appeared to target innocent people packed into one of Europe's busiest tourist hubs.

Police were working last night to piece together the events that led to the tragedy, saying they were treating it as a terrorist attack – with a hunt under way for those involved after the driver fled the scene on foot.

Two suspects related to the attack were said to be in custody last night, a Spanish national from the enclave of Melilla which borders Morocco, and a Moroccan. Neither were believed to be the driver of the van. Another man was shot dead by police having run over two police officers at a checkpoint around six miles away in the wake of the van attack, although authorities later revealed that the incidents were not connected.
