The 10 per cent telecommunication levy imposed on internet services will be removed with effect from 1 September, Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera announced yesterday.

Addressing the media, Minister Samarawera said, the decision was taken with the objective of providing internet facilities at an affordable price as it is very crucial in promoting entrepreneurship.

Accordingly, financial levies imposed on internet connections would be reduced by about 30 per cent. Although the telecommunication levy was removed, the Value Added Tax (VAT) amounts to 15 per cent, Nation Building Tax (NBT) amounts to 2 per cent and Cess levy amounts to 2 per cent will continue to be imposed on internet connections. Although the government decided to remove the telecommunication levy on internet services, the Budget 2017 proposed to increase telecommunication levy on internet services up to 25 per cent from 10 per cent. According to the estimates, the government was expecting to raise Rs 5 billion through revisions of the telecommunication levy.
