National Athletics Championship 2017 will begin on 31 August and go on until 2 September at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium Diyagama.

Athletics Association Sri Lanka (AASL) has made it compulsory for all national athletes to take part and is to take drastic action if they skip the nationals. According to AASL, any athlete who misses the nationals will be removed from the national athletics pool and their monthly allowance will be withheld.

This will be the first time AASL will be holding a domestic competition since the positive doping test of 400m runner Pradeep Kumara rocked the country's athletics arena following the Asian Championship. After Kumara's test there were many revelations of drug use and also about masking procedures. This time around Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency (SLADA) will keep a careful eye during the National Championship.
