A protest will be held at the Northern Provincial Council today (24), during the Council's 103rd sitting, urging the Government to take swift action to release the political prisoners.

Provincial Councillor M.K. Sivajilingam said that around 200 Tamil political prisoners have been held for a very long time. Many demands were put forward to the Government regarding their release, to no avail. "The Government should at least act now before the Tamil Political Prisoners begin to protest. Currently three Tamil political prisoners have launched a hunger strike at the Anuradhapura Prisons. They do not want their cases to be transferred to other districts from Vavuniya, thus all political prisoners should be given a general pardon.

General pardon was given to political prisoners in 1971, 1988 and 1989, similarly all Tamil militant groups were given a general pardon during the Indo-Lanka accord. In the post war period 12,000 former LTTE militants and commanders of the organization were given a general pardon. If President can give a general pardon to the person who came to assassinate him, the rest of the political prisoners also should be pardoned," he said.
