Mahela, Sidath in mix to revamp school cricket

CT Sports: Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has appointed a special consulting committee, which includes many ex players like Mahela Jayawardana, following a meeting held at the Education Ministry yesterday aiming to revamp the School Cricket structure in Sri Lanka.

Earlier Jayawardana had highlighted a need to revamp the school structure to rebuild cricket in Sri Lanka, where he had revealed many shortcomings in the School Cricket System from coaching to equipment.

The committee includes Sidath Wettimuny, Roger Wijesuriya, Jayantha Seneviratne and Carlton Bernadus apart from Jayawardana. Included in the committee also are members from the Schools Cricket Association and coaches.

The special discussion was held yesterday with School Cricket Association members and veterans of the game with the aim of addressing several issues relating to School Cricket, which is the nursery of the Sri Lanka National Cricket team.

The discussion centred around the inclusion of School Cricket Association members to the National Junior selection panel which is responsible for selecting the under 19 National team; building high performance centres in all Provinces; paying an allowance of Rs 2,500 per month to players included in cricket pools and uplifting discipline among players and coaches.

Also focused upon at the discussion was decreasing competitiveness in under 13 cricket and to allow more opportunities for them to enjoy the game while participating; creating a new constitution for school cricket and removing duty component from high quality cricket gear. Several other areas were also touched upon with the active participation of all present, including Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.
