Minister of National Co-existence, Dialogue and Official Languages Mano Ganesan said that the failure on the part of the government to sufficiently enlighten the Chief Prelates of the Malwatta and Asgiriya Chapters on the need to formulate a new Constitution was a massive shortcoming on the part of the administration.

He said that despite the position taken by the Chief Prelates who had insisted on the non necessity of drafting such a Constitution, the government should take the rap for having failed to convince the Maha Sangha on its benefits to the country.

The Minister noted that due to the work rendered by the Buddhist monks, they would have no time to study the merits and demerits of such a mechanism but maintained that the enactment of a new Constitution would benefit the entire country rather than a few individuals.
