Nurses, pharmacists and medical lab technicians, except those in emergency units, in the Northern Province launched a one-day strike yesterday (22), Jaffna Teaching Hospital Director T. Sathiyamoorthy said.

"Many of them have not reported for duty but few of them worked on emergency basis. The Intensive Care Unit and the Emergency units functioned. We have also made arrangements to provide medicines to OPD patients from Osusala," he added.

Patients who have scheduled clinic appointments were advised by Teaching Hospital authorities to collect their relevant medicines and reports today (23), he said. However, he noted that the strike had affected those admitted to inpatient care.

Government Nursing Officers' Association President for Northern Province K. Janarthanan said that the strike was launched in solidarity with other health sector workers who are protesting island-wide. He noted that this trade union action was to clear salary anomalies and overtime allowances, implement promotions, and to re-implement the finger print recording system.

"Although we launched the strike, our members will attend to emergency cases at the Intensive Care and Emergency Unit," he said.
