Chairman of the Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya said, the Commission will make submissions in relation to all the cases involving the rejection of nomination lists of political parties contesting the 2018 Local Government (LG) election.

He said that as both the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal have the authority to impose injunctions against holding of elections to certain LG bodies, the Commission will take necessary action......to make sure the Courts will not hear one-sided arguments.

A total of 63 nomination lists were rejected, including lists of 54 mainstream political parties and nine independent groups.

To contest those rejections, some political parties have petitioned the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal.

Deshapriya said that if interim injunctions were to be slapped on elections to certain LG bodies, the Election Commission will hold the elections in the rest of the Councils.
