Marathoner Madumali Perera set a new personal best when she finished 11th in the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon yesterday.

Madumali, winner of the National Sports Festival marathon, clocked 2 hours 54 minutes 39 seconds in the race to clock her personal best.

Interestingly this was the first time Madumali completed a full marathon without removing her shoes midway, which she used to do in every marathon she ran in Sri Lanka.

Trained under Director of the National Institute of Sports Science (NISS) Sajith Jayalal this was Madumali's second International exposure and her second Sri Lanka representation.

Jayalal who produced Sri Lanka's first ever Olympic Marathoner Geethani Rajasekara to clock a personal best of 2 hours and 40 minutes, was determined to produce another marathon sensation after Geethani left Jayalal to train along with her husband and it appears Jayalal's effort are bearing fruit over time, as Madumali keeps improving day by day along with another bunch of talented athletes under Jayalal, which includes Asian Championship and Asian Indoor Games medallist Gayanthika Abeyrathne, SL record holder Nilani Ratnayake and many others.

Meanwhile, Sampath Tissa Gunasekara who competed in the male category of the same marathon, finished in 19th place with a time of 2 hours 29 minutes and 05 seconds.
