Manipay Memorial English School (MMES) had its beginnings in 1836 with just 7 students, and E. Velauthar as the Principal, in a building located in one corner of the sprawling Green Memorial Hospital campus. From 1872-1881 Vairavanathar Page started operating another school, not too far away from the former. He was succeeded by T. Arunasalam (1882 to 1889) and then A. M. Nathaniel (1889-1900). In 1900, both schools were amalgamated to become the Manipay Memorial English School, and the Sports Houses were named after benevolent early educationists, viz., Page, Scott and Bicknell. The school was really pioneered by the Page family, ancestors of well-known business magnate, Ranjith Page of Cargills fame.
