What did Maithri do?  


These are some of the statements everyone makes. Those who have memories of how Sri Lanka was prior to 8 January 2015 cannot say these things. The biggest thing that Maithri did after becoming President was to release and save the country from the Rajapaksa fear which had gripped the entire country. He generated a country where one could think, write and speak freely. Prior to 8 January 2015, not only Mahinda, but anyone who had anything to do with the name 'Rajapaksa' could not be criticized by the media of this country.

When head of the Bribery Commission Nelum Gamage, during the administration of President D. B. Wijetunga was carrying out investigations into accusations of bribery regarding a chief officer of the Railway Department and powerful figures of the United National Party (UNP), she received a message from DB. What DB told Nelum Gamage was to immediately halt the investigations into the chief at the Railway and the powerful UNP figures and close the files. Nelum Gamage was an honest government official. What she did was to include in the file of the chief at the Railway Department the written request by President DB. Due to this D.B. Wijetunga got angry. Nelum Gamage's mother Yasa De Lanerolle was a very trusted friend of the Opposition Leader, Madame Sirimavo Bandaranaike.

President’s speech and India’s concern  


Subsequent to the controversial statement made by President Maithripala Sirisena that summoning Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the Navy Commanders to Court regarding the Avant Garde Accusation was wrong, the following day which was Thursday, Indian High Commissioner Y.K. Sinha had met Maithri. Although sources from the Indian High Commission said the meeting was to discuss Maithri's trip to India, we cannot say whether Maithri's controversial speech was also subject to discussion on that occasion.

Slaps on the faces of MS-RW by China  


During the time of the war when the Rajapaksa Government was hunting for media who were against the Rajapaksas, innocent journalists who wanted to save their lives fled to India. India granted them visas on requests made by western countries led by America. The Rajapaksas were angered because India granted visas to journalists who were against their government. The group consisting of Basil, Gotabaya and Lalith Weeratunga who were sent to deal with India then by Mahinda expressed their opposition to India for granting visas to journalists opposed to the government.

Rise up with MR in South and rise up with Wiggy in North  


After Mahinda lost the presidential election in 2015, and went to Medamulana, it was Wimal, Udaya Gammanpila and Dinesh who brought pressure to bear on Mahinda to continue in politics, because they were aware they have no political future without Mahinda.

What was in the secret note Biswal gave when Maithri-Kerry discussed?  


An incident of curiosity took place during the meeting between the Secretary of State of USA John Kerry and President Maithripala Sirisena in New York America. Assistant Secretary Nisha Biswal who participated in this meeting, sent a note to John Kerry. Kerry who read the note asked Maithri about the situation of the UNP-SLFP National Government. If Maithri had a doubt as to why Nisha Biswal sent a note to Kerry requesting him to ask about the National Government, it is justified. However, it would have been Mangala and Ranil who were really happy about Nisha Biswal's note.

Road to Nandikadal or Road to grab power  


Last week a function was held at Ananda College, Colombo, to launch the book Road to Nandikadal by Major General Kamal Gunaratne. Neither the President, nor the Prime Minister or any Member of Parliament or Minister of this government had been invited for this function. Only former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa had received invitations.

The appearance of the Tiger woman soldier in Malaysia who was in charge of the security of Dwaraka, Velupillai Prabhakaran's daughter during the end of the war in Vellamulliwaikkal was a surprise to the Tamil community living in Malaysia as well. It was a mystery at that time how, after Dwaraka died, she went to Malaysia. There are a large number of Tamil Tiger leaders who surrendered to the Army and later went abroad, subsequent to Prabhakaran being destroyed on information received from Karuna Amman.

Sri Lanka media are keeping an intense watch on the Indian High Commissioner who has the capacity to change the Cabinet of Sri Lanka (SL). This is because India is also our neighbour. No sooner the name Taranjit Singh Sandhu was mentioned, and he was appointed as the new Indian High Commissioner to SL than the SL media, politicians and leading businessmen as well as the foreign diplomatic circles evinced a special interest and began inquiring about him. 

Is Cardinal against searching for missing priests?  


Senior Journalist D. B. S. Jeyaraj had written an article to a weekend English newspaper. The article was based on the disappearance of Father Thiruchelvam Nihal Jim Brown from a Catholic church in the North. At a moment when laws have been prepared to establish an office to inquire into disappeared persons, it was stated in this article that it was the responsibility of the Maithri-Ranil government to look into the disappearance of this clergyman as well. On the very same day Jeyaraj had written this article, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith had given an interview to a Sunday Sinhala newspaper.

S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike contested the 1947 General Election from the United National Party (UNP) with the agreement of the Leader of the UNP D. S. Senanayake. Bandaranaike thought that because DS was elderly, DS would be the Prime Minister first and later he would be able to claim the post of Prime Minister.

China escapes Ranil’s trap  


Ranil Wickremesinghe recently went to China similar to when Gamini Dissanayake was sent by JR to India during the period 1983-1987 when India was growling at Sri Lanka. JR sent Gamini to India to see whether, the LTTE India made could be given back to India and put an end to the conflict here. Rajiv jumped at that suggestion and put the Indo-Lanka Agreement on to JR's shoulders. JR also accepted it. Rajiv took on the burden of the LTTE.

Alfred Duraiappah is the leader who was moulded by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) in the North. When Madame Bandaranaike who was Prime Minister in 1976 was invited by Duraiappah to tour the North, she accepted with pleasure. When she arrived in the North, Duraiappah put up pandals and welcomed her. She was garlanded with necklaces made out of potatoes, onions and chillies of Jaffna.

Some weeks ago, an application was received, requesting to allocate a hall of the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute, to hold a conference. Maithripala Sirisena was mentioned as the chief guest in it, and this conference was organized by an officer of the Presidential Secretariat.
