President Maithripala Sirisena was scheduled to visit Polonnaruwa last Thursday (25) to commence many programmes. All relevant government officials had already reached Polonnaruwa to make the necessary arrangements and were in for a shocker when the officials from President's Secretariat informed that President Sirisena has cancelled all engagements planned.

President's Polonnaruwa programmes included laying of the foundation stone for the Polonnaruwa new museum building, library and new Kachcheri (District Secretariat) buildings and declaring open the newly constructed Polonnaruwa District National Stadium.

As the unity government of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe completed one year, President Sirisena who is the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) took measures to appoint 40 new electoral and district organizers removing popular yet, rebellious former organizers from their posts.
This was described by many as a move to fuel already soured relations between Rajapaksa and Sirisena camps within the SLFP and as would lead to a split in the party. Following this move, those who are in the Joint Opposition openly backing former President Mahinda Rajapaksa said, they will not attend party's 65th Convention to be held on 4 September in Kurunegala.
However, what caught the attention of many was the strong comeback of President Sirisena who threatened to reveal 'secrets' if anyone attempted to create a new political party.

This was after he went to the Human Rights Commission in Geneva to complain against the abductions taking place under the then government of President Premadasa after obtaining a list of those reported missing during the bloody crackdown against the JVP, from NGOs and sent it to Amnesty International. Not stopping at that Rajapaksa decided to go personally to Geneva to attend the Human Rights Council meeting to lobby for action against the Premadasa Government.

President Maithripala Sirisena on Wednesday, 29 June morning during a kidney disease programme held in Girandurukotte in the Badulla District said he had decided to appoint a new Governor to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) within a few hours.
Few hours later, he arrived at the CBSL, in an apparent unannounced visit, only to be flanked by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe after a few minutes.
