Minister of Power, Energy and Enterprise Development Ravi Karunanayake has reportedly informed the management of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), to submit a detailed report to find any reasons why it was impossible for the addition of any large scale power plants to the national grid during the recent past.
During a discussion held with the management of the CEB yesterday (9), the Minister had stressed that only the solar power systems fixed on roofs had been added to the national grid since 2015.
However, the CEB Engineers Union (CEBEU) stated that no other plant had been added to the national grid recently since the completion of the third phase of the Norochcholai Power Plant in 2013.
One of the reasons for this setback had been the continued disagreement in between the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) and CEB concerning the Least Cost Long Term Generation Expansion Plan (LCLTGEP) compiled by the CEB.
Under such circumstances, the minister insisted the direction of the power sector has to be towards renewable energy in order to minimise the continued losses incurred by the CEB.
A top official of the CEB, who had taken part in the discussion, held by the Minister, told Ceylon Today that focus had also been drawn towards the progress of power projects that are currently underway and those that have already been concluded by the CEB.
He added that the minister had also ordered CEB officials to speed up all power projects that have already been proposed.
General Manager (GM) of CEB engineer A. K. Samarasingha, Additional GMs, Deputy GMs, chief engineers, directors in charge of power projects and the Secretary of the Ministry of Power and Energy Dr. Suren Batagoda, took part in this discussion.
