New Police Division To protect victims and witnesses

Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundera has decided to establish a special Police Division in Hulftsdorp, under the Protection of Victims and Witnesses of Crimes Act.
Speaking at a function to raise awareness on this Act, amongst the Police officers, held yesterday morning at Waters Edge in Battaramulla, the IGP said, this will be the 69th Police Station from among all Police Divisions established across the island at present.

The IGP presented the Minister of Law and Peace, Sagala Ratnayake with the official statement in connection with the establishment of the Assistance and Protection Division of victims and witnesses in a crime, on this occasion.
According to this Act, the rights and claims of victims and witnesses in a crime will be promoted, safeguarded and empowered as well as implemented.

This Act includes provisions for providing support and protection to victims and witnesses in a crime and legal provisions to allow obtaining of compensation for the victim from the individual, who has been found guilty of committing an offence against the victim in a crime.

This Act is known as the Act to Provide Support and Protection to Victims and Witnesses of a Crime, No. 4 of 2015. The IGP said that complaints in this regard will be coordinated with Police Stations across the island in the future through this newly established police division.

According to this Act, provisions can be made to establish a fund for the victims and witnesses of a crime and for their support and protection as well as other related or consequent matters.
