A plot of land has been allocated to the Embassy of the State of Palestine for the construction of a permanent building to house the Embassy offices, Cabinet spokesman Minister of Mass Media and Parliamentary Reform Gayantha Karunathilaka said.

This decision was made following Cabinet approval of a proposal made by Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera. The land allocated is down Hewa Avenue, Colombo 7.

The Embassy for the State of Palestine presently functions at 110/10.Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7.

Ironically, Samaraweera came under fire by Muslim politicians with regard to Sri Lanka's abstention from the vote when UNESCO adopted a resolution recognizing the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem last year.

Samaraweera also was at the receiving end of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa's ire in 2007 when the former was the foreign Minister of the then Rajapaksa Cabinet. Samaraweera chose to remain neutral with regard to a special resolution brought to the UN by the Palestinian Authority against Israel for abuses of the Palestinian people.
