The gazette notification, issued by the Higher Education Ministry, approving the South Asian Institution of Technology and Medicine......(SAITM), should be cancelled if SAITM fails to get the compliance certificate from the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC), the Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) said yesterday.

Addressing the media, GMOA General Secretary Dr. Naveen de Soysa said, the GMOA would continue its struggle against the standards issues of SAITM, if the government fails to address it.

Dr. Soysa further criticized Minister S. B. Dissanayake, who was the Higher Education Minister at the time of starting SAITM, for issuing a Gazette Notification without having a compliance certificate from the SLMC.

Meanwhile, the Faculty of Medical Teachers' Associations (FMTA), in a statement, said that recruitment of new students to the medical degree programme of SAITM should cease immediately until definitive solutions are reached.

FMTA further urged the Minister of Health to inform the relevant legal authorities (including the Supreme Court) of his endorsement of the SLMC report and insist on gazetting prescribed minimum standards for medical education as required by the Medical Ordinance.
