The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday (20) told Court that former Editor of the Sunday Leader newspaper, veteran journalist Lasantha Wickrematunga had been assassinated by a special team which was operating under a prominent Intelligence Officer, who is now retired.

Submitting their findings to Court,......the CID said that this special team had not only killed Lasantha Wickrematunga, but had also carried out the attacks on Upali Tennakoon and Keith Noyahr during the same period. Most of the attacks on and harassment of journalists had been connected to each other they said.

It is said that, this team which operated under this officer, had used five mobile telephone SIM cards, and all calls connected to the killing of Wickrematunga had been taken on the phones in which those SIM cards had been inserted.

However, the Intelligence Division officer, who was taken into custody in connection with the murder of Lasantha Wickrematunga and who is out on bail now, was ordered by the Mount Lavinia Court to be present in Court on the last Sunday of every month between 9 a.m. and 12 noon. This case is to be taken up for hearing again on 19 June.

The CID also submitted to Court that the remains of Lasantha Wickrematunga were exhumed on Court orders and a different group of doctors had carried out an examination and the report had already been forwarded to Court. According to that report, Wickrematunga's died due to a blow to the head with a pointed weapon, which had caused severe injury. It had been confirmed that this was the cause of death and that no shooting had occurred.
