Saumy Zainab wins Championship

The World Amateur Chess championship was held in Spoleto, Italy from 01 to 09 April. The games took place in the Rocca Albornoziana. The tournament was held as a separate championship for the rating categories Under-2300, Under-2000 and Under-1700.

Saumy Zainab (Girl's High School Kandy) played in rating category 2000 (women's section). There were 10 participants from 08 nations and Saumy was ranked third.

The tournament was held as a 09 rounds round robin event with the time control of 90 minutes for 40 moves + 30 min. for the rest of the game + 30'' increment for every move starting from move one.

Saumy finished the event scoring 07 points from the 09 games. She lost to Kristina Kim from KAZ in the 5th round. She drew against WCM Coelho Tatiane Cristine from BRA in the 7th round and Gazman Paola from ARG in the 9th round.

She won the championship in a grand manner leading by one point. At the end of theevent she increased her ELO rating by 9 points.
