Sri Lanka Customs is currently grilling a Pettah businessman in connection with a container which had 30,000 small bottles of snuff,...... 2,000 kilograms of beedi leaves and 1,500 pairs of slippers.

The undeclared contraband was stuffed in a container, which the Bankshall Street businessman had claimed contained textiles, Sri Lanka Customs spokesman Dharmasena Kahandawa told Ceylon Today, last afternoon.

He added that the container containing the contraband had arrived on a ship at the Port of Colombo from Chennai last month. The detection had been made last Thursday.

He said the delay in detecting the contraband was due to the contents not being officially declared. However, he put down the value at Rs 8 million.

He explained that snuff was a prohibited item and the duty rate of the beedi leaves, if declared, would have come to Rs 2,700 per kilo and the slippers Rs 800 per pair.
