The Customs seized two containers with 32,000 litres of glyphosate, a banned substance imported by a Colombo businessman from China, a senior official said yesterday.... that the containers have 'non ionic substances.' However, on suspicion the Customs suspended the release of the two containers.

"The two containers were examined at Gray Line II examination yard and it was found that they contain glyphosate. The containers were loaded with 160 drums, each containing 200 litres," he added.

Glyphosate is believed to be one of the main causes for chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) and the Minister of Finance, by Extraordinary Gazette Notification 1918/11 in 2015 banned the importation of the substance.

Further investigations are continuing.
