President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday said that the management of the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) will be broad-based and then listed on the Colombo Share Market (CSM), under a wider ownership umbrella.

He told heads of media institutions yesterday that he discussed the SAITM issue with all concerned interests , adding that the Inter University Students' Federation students had told him that the SAITM is managed by only one person. So I ordered broad-basing of the management structure."

The President said that he will appoint a Board of Governors to manage the private sector educational institution as was the norm in other countries too. " We have introduced minimum standards for the SAITM and ordered an increase in the number of scholarships for students. Also the tuition fees will be decreased", he said.

Speaking at the briefing Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said that the Sri Lanka Medical Council does not have prescribed minimum standards for private sector education. " We will consult the World Federation of Medical Education to prepare a Minimum Standards Specification."

Minister Senaratne said that although SAITM has not admitted students who have only three simple A/L passes , government medical colleges have such students. He said that Monash University with an investment of US 1.3 billion, as well as Manipal University of India, are prepared to open medical colleges in Sri Lanka.
