An attempt to smuggle into the country 2,089 live star tortoises was foiled by the Sri Lanka Navy in the seas off Kalpitiya last Saturday (17). Two men were arrested and the dinghy they were using to bring the tortoises from India was seized.

Navy sources told Ceylon Today that the arrest of the wildlife smugglers was made following an intelligence report to the Navy. A group of personnel from the North-Western Naval Command apprehended the two suspects in the sea area in between Ippantivu and Sinna Arichchal in Kalpitiya. The suspects, star tortoises, the dinghy and other items were taken to the naval base SLNS Vijaya in Kalpitiya and subsequently handed over to the Sinnapadu Customs Office for onward legal action.
