United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Parliamentarian, Namal Rajapaksa, cast doubt on the Government's ability to handle the Qatar crisis, due to its close ties...... with Western countries.

Speaking to Ceylon Today, Rajapaksa, the son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, said, "I honestly don't know how they will handle it.

With their new political friends, it is no secret that this government is keener on the Western countries, so I don't know how they will face the Middle East crisis. If this crisis escalates it will be very difficult for the Government as most of our labour force is in the Middle East."

He added that Qatar has got 100,000 Sri Lankans working there, therefore, Sri Lanka has to be very smart and none aligned. The Government shouldn't align itself to any nation; it should stick to the middle path and observe as to how the situation matures, he said.

"During my father's tenure in governance, we had to face a similar issue, with Libya and Iran. I think we managed it well, we didn't make enemies or any friends, and we kept a neutral relationship with all. Qatar has been very helpful to us, with regard to development and exports. Qatar has been a very strong partner," he said.
