The Department of Immigration and Emigration said they have received information about a complaint made by a 21-year-old Rohingya Muslim girl that she has been raped by a Police officer attached to the Mirihana Detention Camp.

The Department of Immigration and Emigration, the Police Crime Branch and the Kohuwala Police are conducting inquiries following a complaint lodged by the victim's brother.

The alleged incident is said to have taken place several days ago when the girl was warded at the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital due to an influenza attack.

Immigration and Emigration Department Spokesman Lakshan de Zoysa told Ceylon Today that according to the complaint, the girl had allegedly been 'removed' from the hospital by a Police officer. She had not been discharged from the hospital at the time she had left it.

According to the information he received, the victim's brother had lodged a complaint with the Kohuwala Police that his sister had not been in her hospital bed that night and he had found out that she had been 'taken away' by a Police officer attached to the detention camp and dropped back at the hospital on the following day morning.

SP Ruwan Gunasekara, who confirmed that a rape complaint has been lodged with the Kohuwala Police, said that an investigation was in progress and the girl has given details of the officer who had raped her, but the Police are yet to arrest the suspect.

"We have identified one suspect but are yet to confirm with the details the complainant has given. When the person is identified we will arrest him and interdict him," the SP said.

According to media reports, the woman is still kept in a separate hospital room, where no one, including the UNHCR recruited lawyer is allowed to talk to her.

The alleged incident is narrated as: when the brother-in-law of the victim had asked permission to bring the girl from hospital after she had been treated for the flu, the lady Police officer had said that she was on duty and requested the duty officer to keep the girl in hospital till the next morning.

Hearing this conversation, another male officer had soon gone to the hospital and told her that he would take her to the detention camp.
